Scouting & Data Collection
How do I start a scouting session?
- Open the Scouting App
- Select a field from the Properties tile
- Tap the green Scout tile
- Choose the methodology for that crop
- Begin entering observations at your first sample point
What is the difference between the green and blue app icons?
- Green Icon (Scouting App): For entering data in the field

Do I need internet connection to scout?
No. The Scouting App works offline. All data saves locally and syncs automatically when you regain connectivity.
How do I add photos during scouting?
- While in a scouting event, tap the Camera icon
- Take a photo or select from gallery
- The photo automatically geo-tags to your current location
Can I record voice notes?
Yes. Tap the Microphone icon during a scouting event to record a voice memo. Audio files sync to the Web Panel.
How do I see my GPS location on the field?
- Open the Map tile in the Scouting App
- Your current location appears as a blue dot
- Enable NDVI layer to see satellite imagery underneath
Why can't I see the Scout tile?
The Scout tile only appears when:
- A crop is assigned to the selected field
- A methodology is configured for that crop in your organization
If either is missing, contact your administrator.
Methodologies
What is a methodology?
A methodology is the structured checklist of targets (insects, weeds, diseases, other metrics) configured for a specific crop in your organization. It determines what you scout and how results are displayed.
How do I know which methodology to use?
Methodologies are automatically assigned based on the crop. When you select a field, the Scout tile shows only the methodology configured for that crop.
Can I customize a methodology?
Yes, administrators can customize methodologies through the Admin panel. Contact your organization administrator to request changes.
What is a phenomenon?
A phenomenon is what you're scouting—for example, a specific insect, weed species, disease, or field condition.
What is a characteristic?
A characteristic is how you measure a phenomenon—count per plant, pressure level, percentage of infestation, etc.
What is an inspection group?
An inspection group is a collection of characteristics that are observed together at the same sample point. For example, a "Plant Health" group might include insect count, disease pressure, and canopy coverage.
What are control and damage thresholds?
- Control Threshold: The level at which action should be taken to prevent economic damage (appears YELLOW)
- Damage Threshold: The level at which economic loss is occurring (appears RED)
Why is my scouting data showing yellow or red?
Yellow and red colors indicate observations have exceeded defined thresholds in the methodology. Yellow means control action is recommended; red means damage is occurring.
NDVI & Satellite Imagery
What is NDVI?
NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) is a satellite-derived measurement of vegetation health. It compares red light (absorbed by chlorophyll) to near-infrared light (reflected by healthy plants) to indicate biomass and vigor.
How often is satellite imagery updated?
- Sentinel: Every 5 days (free, included)
- Planet: Daily (if high-resolution access is enabled for your account)
What do the NDVI colors mean?
| Color | NDVI Range | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Dark Green | 0.8–1.0 | Dense, healthy vegetation |
| Green | 0.6–0.8 | Healthy, moderate density |
| Light Green | 0.4–0.6 | Moderate stress or early growth |
| Yellow | 0.2–0.4 | Stressed or sparse vegetation |
| Orange/Red | 0.0–0.2 | Very stressed, dying, or bare soil |
What is Easy Scout?
Easy Scout is a feature that automatically prioritizes fields based on NDVI trends. It categorizes fields as High (red), Medium (yellow), or Low (green) priority so you can scout the most critical areas first.
How does Easy Scout determine priority?
- Analyzes NDVI change over the past 30 days (Sentinel) or 14 days (Planet)
- Filters out images with >70% cloud coverage
- Fields with declining NDVI receive higher priority
How do I enable NDVI on my mobile device?
- Open the Scouting App
- Tap the Map tile
- Select the layers icon
- Choose NDVI imagery
Why is NDVI imagery not loading?
- Sync the app while connected to WiFi
- Verify your organization has Imagery integration enabled
- Check for cloud coverage blocking recent satellite passes
Syncing & Offline Mode
How do I sync my scouting data?
Data syncs automatically when you have an internet connection. You can also manually sync by pulling down on the home screen.
Will I lose data if I scout offline?
No. Data saves locally on your device and syncs automatically when connectivity is restored.
How do I know if my data has synced?
- Check the sync status indicator in the Settings tile
- Look for the "last synced" timestamp
- View the data on the Web Panel to confirm
What is a Mayday Code?
A Mayday Code is a diagnostic tool used by Syngenta Digital Support to troubleshoot sync failures. If you encounter persistent sync issues, Support may ask you to send a Mayday Code.
How do I send a Mayday Code?
- Open Settings in the Scouting App
- Press and hold the Syngenta Digital logo for 4 seconds
- Tap Send Data to Server
- Note the 8-digit Mayday Code
- Create the support ticket at https://help.eu.cropwise.com and share all details of your issue
Can I use multiple devices with the same account?
Yes, but unsynced data lives only on the specific device. Always sync before switching devices to avoid data loss.
