Getting Started with Cropwise Protector

This guide walks you through setting up Cropwise Protector for the first time, from account access to your first scouting session.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure you have:

• A Cropwise account with valid credentials
• Access to your organization's workspace
• Mobile device (iOS or Android) for the Scouting App
• Computer with internet access for Web Panel configuration
• Field boundary information (shapefiles or manual mapping capability)

Step 1: Access Farm Settings

Before scouting, you must map your fields and assign crops. Navigate to Farm Settings:

1. Go to app.cropwise.com
2. Select your Organization tile
3. You will see the organization dashboard with farm management options

Step 2: Add Farms and Fields

Creating a New Farm

1. In Farm Settings, click the green + New Farm button
2. Enter the farm name and location
3. Click Save

Mapping Field Boundaries

You have two options for adding fields:

Option A: Import from Shapefile

1. Select the farm where you want to add fields
2. Click + New Field
3. Choose the Import tile
4. Upload a zipped shapefile (.zip containing .shp, .shx, .dbf files) or an unzipped GeoJSON file
5. Field boundaries and names will import automatically

Option B: Manually Draw Boundaries

1. Select the farm where you want to add fields
2. Click + New Field
3. Choose the Draw tile
4. Enter a field name
5. Use the Polygon drawing tool to click and drop points along the field boundary
6. Double-click or click the first point to close the shape
7. Verify/adjust the acreage if needed
8. Click Save

Step 3: Assign Crops to Fields

After mapping fields, assign crops to enable scouting:

1. Click the Seasons tab in the left menu
2. Expand the field list using the dropdown arrow
3. Select one or more fields to assign the same crop
4. Click + Associate Crop
5. Search or scroll to select the crop
6. Enter the season date range
7. Name the crop season (defaults to "Crop Year", e.g., "Corn 2025")
8. Click Save

Creating Custom Season Names

1. Click in the Crop Season name dropdown
2. Enter your custom name in the Insert Crop Cycle box
3. Click Add
4. Select the new season name from the list
5. Click Save

Step 4: Download the Scouting App

The Cropwise Protector Scouting App is used for in-field data capture:

• iOS: Download from the App Store — Look for the green icon with blue shield
• Android: Download from Google Play — Look for the green icon with blue shield

Step 5: Log In to the Scouting App

1. Open the Cropwise Protector Scouting App
2. Enter your Cropwise credentials
3. Select your organization and workspace
4. The app will sync and display your configured fields

Step 6: Understanding the Scouting App Interface

Tile Menu Navigation

The Scouting App uses a tile-based navigation system:

Enabling NDVI Imagery Overlay

1. Open the Map tile
2. Tap the layers icon
3. Select NDVI imagery to overlay satellite data on your fields
4. Your GPS location will display on top of the imagery for targeted scouting

Step 7: Complete Your First Scout

1. Select a field from the Properties tile
2. Tap the green Scout tile
3. Choose the active methodology for that crop
4. Walk to your first sample point
5. Select the inspection group relevant to your observation
6. Enter data for each phenomenon (pest count, pressure level, etc.)
7. Add photos or voice notes as needed
8. Move to the next sample point and repeat
9. When finished, sync your data to upload to the cloud

Step 8: View Data in the Web Panel

After syncing, access your scouting data on the web:

1. Go to protector.cropwise.com
2. Select your organization
3. View recent scouting events on the map
4. Click fields to see detailed history, photos, and audio
5. Access the Dashboard for weather, statistics, and acres affected

Step 9: Configure SMS Reports (Optional)

Enable automatic SMS reports using the Mobile App:

1. Download the Cropwise Protector Mobile App (blue icon with green shield)
2. Log in with your credentials
3. Navigate to Settings
4. Configure SMS report recipients and frequency

First Week Checklist

Use this checklist to ensure proper setup:

• ☐ Verified organization country setting
• ☐ Created all necessary farms
• ☐ Imported or manually drawn all field boundaries
• ☐ Assigned crops to all fields for the current season
• ☐ Downloaded Scouting App on mobile device
• ☐ Synced all data while on WiFi
• ☐ Enabled NDVI imagery overlay
• ☐ Completed at least one test scouting session
• ☐ Verified data appears in Web Panel after sync
• ☐ Configured SMS reports (if applicable)

Troubleshooting Common Setup Issues

Crops Not Appearing in Dropdown

This usually indicates the organization's country setting is incorrect or the crop hasn't been enabled for your country. Contact your administrator or Customer Success.

Fields Not Visible in Scouting App

• Verify you've synced the app with an active internet connection
• Confirm crops are assigned to fields in Farm Settings
• Check that the crop season date range includes today's date

Sync Failure in Scouting App

If you encounter persistent sync failures:

1. Slide the tile menu left to the Settings tile
2. Press and hold the Syngenta Digital logo for 4 seconds
3. Tap Send Data to Server
4. Note the Mayday Code (8-digit number)
5. Create a ticket at https://help.eu.crowpise.com with a description of your issue.
